Is a tutor necessary in learning a new language?

i know having some guidance when it comes to proper pronunciation of words would be great to have but is it really necessary? what would be some alternatives?

Does it depend on the language? My sister is learning mandarin and since that language is categorized as "difficult" does it benefit her to have a tutor? As opposed to someone learning spanish which is generally categorized as "easy"

I think it depends on how well you need to be able to speak or understand the language, and how fast you need to progress.

If communicating with native speakers is not that important, and if you're motivated and disciplined, you can teach yourself, at the very least, the basic grammar and syntax of most languages.

Mandarin might be different because there are about 5 different pitches that are part of the meaning of each word. I don't see how you could learn that from a book. However, you could buy, or borrow from a library, DVDs or CDs of native speakers. Once you've learned a little, even watching TV shows in Mandarin should help.

    • No, I a tutor isn't necessary, neither is a teacher. All you really need are some books or just use the internet. Language difficulty has nothing to do with it. Chinese is only categorized as "difficult" because of the writing, the grammar, sentence structure, etc, are easier than English.
Honestly, the internet or some books can be a better tutor than any, well, tutor.
